So why is everyone using
google analytics anyway?
It seems like the rumor out
there is that you need to have it on your website to improve your
search engine ranking or something like that.
Well, I have news for you, it
wont. It won't improve anything, it wont help anything.
In fact it will hurt you
tremendously.
But before we talk about why
google analytics are bad for your website, lets talk about why
google offers this service in the first place.
They don't do this out of the
goodness of their hearts, oh no, they have an angle and they make
a crap load of cash on this "FREE" service.
What they are doing is taking
your data and selling it.
That seems harmless right? Who
cares what they do with a bunch of useless data?
Well, they are tell YOUR
COMPETITORS, who is visiting your website, how many people visit
your website, what time they visit, what pages they visit, what
they are buying most, what you are selling, the keywords people
are searching for and finding your pages and well, everything
else they can deduct about your business.
Now I don't know about the
rest of you, but When I went to business school, I don't remember
the class on telling your competitor all the secrets about your
business.
Companies have complete
departments to analyze this type of data and guard it with their
highest security.
But if you have google
analytics, you are giving it away.
Now your competitors, the ones
with money, know that 30% of your traffic is coming in on a page
with certain words in them.
So they can make hundreds of
pages with those words so they can get your traffic.
They know what types of
products people are buying, so now they can feature those
products on similar pages to yours.
If you noticed traffic
declining after adding google analytics to your pages, now you
know why. You gave up all the secrets to your competitors.
But wait, it gets worse.
Having anything with google
involved in your website will hurt you in Yahoo and Bing rankings.
I am not going to say they
wont list you in there searches because you deal with google, but
does it make sense for Bing to send users to pages with google
analytics so google can then lean what bing is doing?
Why type of traffic bing has,
what bing users are searching for... I don't think so!
I promise you, Microsoft is
not making the same mistakes as joe the plumber and mom's bakery.
So that means if you have
google ad words, google analytics, google api's or any other
google hosted service, well say goodbye to the other two thirds
of the Internet traffic controlled by yahoo and bing.
Here is another little tid bit
for you about losing traffic and how google works.
Let say you only get a few
visitors a month.
Well, in google's mind, you
are not a very popular website.
So they really don't have any
reason to send you visitors because there is very little interest
in your business or product.
They don't want to waste time
with the small sites.
They want to make their users
happy with sites that are popular with many users.
Sites that they know people
will be glad to find in the google results.
If nobody visits your site,
they assume nobody is interested and their is no point in send
people to it.
Just think about it.
If you search for "online
auction" you get results for ebay, ubid and other huge
auction sites.
But what about your auction
site trying to compete with them, well, who cares? Not google.
Because if they send visitors
to you and not ebay, the visitors wont be satisfied with what you
offer compared to bay.
So your site is buried in the
180 million results, and the sites they place on top of the
results are the ones that have all the traffic.
Now on the other hand, if you
don't tell google you only have 20 visitors a month, well, they
can't use it against you.
And if you don't tell google
what you are selling, who is buying and so on, well, they can't
sell it to your competitors.
So be more like BING and Yahoo,
and protect the little data you have.
And try to realize that your
addiction to google webmaster tools is just like an addiction to
drugs. It might feel good today but the long tern effect is
horrible and one day it might even kill you.
So stay off drugs and staff
off of google analytics.
