Seriously?
Just when you though you had
seen it all here comes a name in website hosting that nobody ever
expected. Believe it or not HULK Hogan himself.
At first I did not take this
seriously and after looking at it further I even take it less
seriously.
We can't assume that Hulk
Hogan has any kind of IT background, so I am not sure why anyone
would want a website from him. Sure, he has a huge fan base and
that is no doubt what the tech people behind hostamainia.com are
counting on.
Before I knock down
hostamainia.com I have to say I am a big fan of Mr Hogan, I grew
up watching him wrestle and he was a hero. I watched the movies
he did and appearances on TV shows like The A Team and The Love
Boat, he is a pop icon and very well respected.
I will even admit to watching
his MTV reality show and admiring his ability to keep his career
going. So I have loads of respect for Mr Hogan.
But when you enter
my backyard, well that would be like me crawling the the
wrestling ring with you. You want to do website hosting, now
we have to battle it out fair and square.
The problem is, it
is not a fair fight because the entire HOSTAMANIA.com website is
a complete joke.
I don't want to blame Mr Hogan
because I don't think he is involved in the back end, but someone
really sold him a bill of goods this time.
The website itself was under
construction when he began advertising it on TV. He was out
promoting it and there was no website, that is a big misstep.
But you would think that
building a hosting company takes time and money and maybe they
are setting up networks, building a datacenter, deploying fiber
and all the other things that come with website hosting.
But that does not appear to be
the case. In fact, hostamania does not even appear to be a
website host at all but just a reseller for someone else.
I think the Hulkster
might have his own "heathcare.gov problems" going on
here.
When looking up the IP Address
of the website hostamania.com it is assigned to some online
school named "ECPI College of Technology" who has 256
ips assigned in their netblock from an upstream provider.
That is really confusing that
a website hosting company's website would be hosted by a school
with a limited ability of less than 256 IP Addresses for the
entire school.
But looking at it further the
website itself is actually built on WORDPRESS.
It may in fact be the only
website hosting company using wordpress for their website, the
free blogging platform commonly used by college kids.
Wait, now I think I see the
correlation, college style website hosted at a college.
Is this a hosting company or a
school project?
Did someone from "ECPI
College of Technology" convince the Amazing Hulk Hogan that
they were the next Mark Zuckerberg? That they could build the
next Facebook?
I can tell you, the poor woman
that had her picture used on the front of the healthcare.gov
website was in tears to be associated with such a failure, I hope
MR Hogan is not in tears when he realizes what he is associating
himself with. I hope it does not damage his brand.
I have seen the
press and the Hulk is comparing his company with Godaddy.com.
Seriously?
Your college website
on built using wordpress is better than godaddy.com. A multi
billion dollar company that employs thousands of people, runs
tens of thousands of servers and manages an infrastructure as big
as anyone else in the world.
Seriously
MR Hogan.
You website does not even have a support phone number!
Hey, I know this guy grew up
an TV with the theatrics, fake blood and pulling punches. After
all, if a guy like that did punch someone for real, one hit and
it is lights out forever!
So you can't blame him for
doing his part in promoting this little venture the way he
learned.
But come on, is it
even a company at all?
Do they even have one
single website server?
Do the own any
technology or have any employees?
Or are they just like the
other millions of resellers selling services for real hosting
companies like godaddy.com, pageBuzz.com and Web.com?
Clearly they are just
reselling services and trying to use the Hulkamania brand to make
money in the technology market. But who is going to bite?
I hope people are not that
stupid, I hope they will use companies like pageBuzz.com that can
actually provide support and at least have a support phone number.
It would be interesting to get
a tour of their datacenter or their support staff and see the
company headquarters rather than videos of Hulk Hogan in his same
old wrestling costumes.
Sure the whole Miley Cyrus
Parody video on a wrecking ball is cute, I will admit that. But
how does that help me with my website?
How is a video
with the Hulk in a G-String going to help me when my website
is offline and I don't even have a phone number to call?
Now I could be wrong, I am
sure he has access to more money than I do and he can finance a
multi million dollar datacenter and programmers, system
administrators and all the tech people needed to run a real
website hosting company.
But if I am right, being seen
wearing a thong wont be the most embarassing moment for Mr Hogan.
My belief is that in time the
Hulk will wish he never got involved in something he did not
understand. I think this will end badly and damage a reputation
that has taken a lifetime to build.
I wish Mr Hogan the
best of luck, but as a competitor, I have to call him out on this
fiasco.
