Why Google Ads Don't
Pay Very Well Anymore
I have been running affiliate
websites and advertising websites since 2004 when I started bumblebeeworks and pageBuzz.com just to fill in my time when we
first started building our customer base.
Consequently, I stall have a
load of affiliate and advertising websites and have a google
adsense account that pays monthly, or at least it used to pay
monthly when I first started.
The payments went from a few
thousand dollars a month down to a few dollars a month and I
attributed that to the fact that I had ignored the sites, moved
on to supporting my website hosting clients and making money in
different areas.
But recently, I had time so I
started rebuilding some of the sites in an effort to bolster our
own advertising efforts, so why not keep using the google ads,
right? Why not take the extra income and build it back up to
those thousands of dollars a month?
It seems like an easy task, my
sites have more traffic than the did in 2004, I know more and I
can make more money.
Well, I started noticing some
very big problems with not only the google ads, but several
similar systems.
In their immense greed
to learn what I do, what I want and what I am buying they have
tracked me like hunted prey. They set cookies, built profiles and
probably have some artificial intelligence working like an FBI
profiler telling them what ads I want to see.
The problem is, that does not
work, at least in my cash and I believe in most cases.
Since my business is website
hosting, I send a lot of time answering emails about website
hosting on Gmail (google tracked) I do searches on google for
website hosting (google tracked) and surf other website hosts (google
tracked).
And as a result,
whenever I go to any website with google ads, they show me ads
for my competitors, other website hosts.
Now, even if I was researching
website hosting, I only need one host for my websites, so why am
I looking at website hosting ads for months and months and never
getting anything but website hosting ads.
I can only sign up one
time and that is only going to earn someone a few dollars. So why
is google showing me thousands of ads? It most cost them way more
than they can get paid.
But here is what rubs me the
wrong way, it is not the tracking and profiling that google uses,
but the fact that when I search for fishing equipment, I get ads
for website hosting on the fishing websites.
When I search for
automotive parts I get ads for website hosting on the parts
websites.
Now, in 2004 when I was making
money with google adsense, the ad content was specified to the
page the user was on. So if I was on a fishing website, I saw ads
for fishing equipment. If I was on an automotive website, I saw
ads for other cars for sale.
But today, google things they
know more about what I want as a customer, so when I am looking
for fishing lures, they try to sell me website hosting.
For the person that runs the
fishing website they have people searching for fishing equipment
and being sold everything from household goods to real estate
with the so called targeted ads.
Do they really think I will
click on an add to buy website hosting when I am shopping for
fishing lures, boating supplies or places to fish?
I think something might have
snapped over their in the google main frame.
Maybe they have too much time
on their hands because they are really screwing everything up in
ways that nobody would have ever imagined.
More and more people are
asking why google searches suck so much and why they can't find
anything anymore.
Google has injected new ideas
into search, ones that don't make any sense at all. Such as
displaying similar content searches.
Now, mind you, this is
google's own example:
When someone
searches for "Hilliary Clinton" the goal of google
is 2013 is to provide a few pages about Hilliary Clinton, and
a few pages about related topics such as "Joe Biden",
"Michelle Obama" and "John Kerry".
Now, what brainiac at Google
Inc came up with that idea?
When I type in a search,
instead of showing me what I searched for, so me some other
things I might be interested in. Like maybe they can get me off
topic, or just send me on a wild goose chase looking for
information.
I guess I have to search for
"Michelle Obama" to find information about "Hilliary
Clinton".
I can't even imagine why they
would do something like that. Just like i can't image why they
are advertising website hosting on a fishing website.
The thing is, google was
making 2 or 3 times as much money in the past when they had it
right or course that was highly innovative thinking compared to
what they have now.
The whole reason that their
profiling system does not work is that most people do more than
one thing.
Someone my be searching for
website hosting at work and then maybe toys for their kids for
Christmas. They might later be looking for a bed and breakfast to
take their wife for an anniversary.
The whole point of the
internet is to let people do anything and everything right from
their computer.
But some PHD at Google Inc
thinks that people are one one thing, that they can't shop for
more than one item or buy sporting goods and food. Once they have
a profile, they just keep trying to sell you the same thing until
you get sick of it.
The wost part is, if you share
a family computer, everyone gets the same ads. So now they are
trying to sell my kids website hosting as well.
Didn't anyone
at google ever think maybe, more than one person might
use a computer?
Didn't anyone
at google consider that maybe people do more than just
one thing?
Didn't anyone
at google think that maybe, just maybe I wanted to find
information about what I searched for?
I don't know. maybe it is just
me being cynical but I don't need google thinking for me, trying
to determine what I want, what I need or what I should buy.
So my websites, the ones
running google ads to earn extra cash, they are useless, because
google is in some fantasy world where people are not allowed to
have more than one idea, one like, or one activity.
Maybe google thinks people are
mindless zombies that they can control, or maybe, the PHDs at
Google have become zombies and are just writing code at random.
Whatever the case, the
money you can make on google ads is declining fast and almost
pointless to use.
