How do I get in the Search Engines?

I think I may have written 100 articles on this topic as well as creating several videos. But still, it is the number on topic of conversation on most of our hone support calls.

The first thing I ask, is let me see your website. Lets see what you have and what you can improve.

As usual, I see a website with maybe 2 paragraphs on the front pages, a slideshow, a contact page and maybe some pictures.

So I have to tell people, expect for the 50 words you have on the home page, you wont be in the search engines for anything.

"What do you mean?" they yell in anger. "Why am i not in the search engines?".

Once again, like a broken record. You can't be in the search engines for anything if you don't have the content on your page.

If you want to be found for "website hosting" you need to have the terms "website hosting" on the pages. It is that simple.

  • If you have the terms "any keywords" in a page you get listed for that.

  • If you don't have the terns "any keywords" you don't get listed.

If you sell "Clam Shell Jewelry" and someone search google for "Heating and Air Conditioning" they don't find your website. Why, because you don't have the words "Heating and Air Conditioning" on your website.

Likewise, if you don't have the words "Clam Shell Jewelry" you wont be fond for that either.

It is pretty easy to understand from that perspective.

Ask why you don't get found for other things and you know why you are not being found for the things you want to be found for.

So what do you need to do to maximize SEO and get your keywords on your pages?

  • Identify Keywords

  • Create keyword rich content

  • Add that content to web pages

  • Update old content with new relevant content

Identify Keywords

The first step in creating SEO content is to make a list of the keywords or phrases that you think people will search for and what is relevant to your business. If you end up with 10 keywords, that is not enough. If you have 100 keyword phrases, then you are just getting started.

The more you have, the more likely it will be that people can find you.

Once you have established a list of keyword phrases, you will need to integrate those into content for your pages.

Create Keyword Rich Content

This can be done in many different ways although all the same in that they will be clear consise text based content.

You can work the keywords into product descriptions, write articles or even make daily blog posts. As long as you use the keyword phrases on the pages, then you have some chance of people finding you for those keywords.

But if the keywords are not on the pages, then you have zero chance of being found for those keywords.

Add Content to Web Pages

Once you have determined how you will add the content, now get it on your website.

I always recommend writing articles over 500 words with a dabbling of the main keywords in the page. Talk about related items, products or services.

If you sell website hosting, talk about other companies that sell website hosting like Godaddy, web.com and others.

If you design websites, talk about SEO, building graphics and other topics that relate directly to your keywords.

The search engines don't want to send users to a page with just the keywords, they want to send people to the pages that have detailed information about the topic.

So if your topic is "Engine Rebuilding" write an article that includes, disassembly, machine work, parts replacement and putting it all back together.

That way, not only do you have the keywords "Engine Rebuilding" you have relevant related content as well as many additional keywords that fall into place.

A search engine will not send anyone to a page that has the words "Engine Rebuilding" in the middle of the page in big letter with a picture and the price.

But they will gladly send people to a page that explains how to rebuild an engine or the process you use to rebuild the engine and why people need to use your service.

Frequents Updates

You need to update content and add new content. If you are writing articles about something that does not exist, it could date your pages. You need current references, topics and updates that keep you in vogue and up to date.

Add new articles whenever possible, make subtle changes to existing pages so the search engines see that they are current and changing.

Websites are not a "Set it and Forget it" type product. You have to keep them updated, add new pages and manage them as your business and the market changes.

You do it with your building, you repaint, you change decor and overhaul your look.

People get bored with the same old stuff, so you change and make it fresh.

Try to keep the same mindset when it comes to websites and the search engines will respect what you are doing and keep you listed high in the search engine result pages.
