Mark's 2 cents on SEO for your website

So you want to know about SEO.

For those of you that don't know what SEO stands for, it is Search Engine Optimization.

It is one of those things thrown around like a baseball.

People act like there is a something special that you need to know to optimize a website for the search engines.

Well, you don't and anyone that tells you different is full of shit!

Only you can optimize your website.

You can do that by adding content.

CONTENT! CONTENT! and more CONTENT!

That means writing articles, adding pages with information and all the keywords you want to be found for.

If you want to be found for "Joe's Heating and Air of Atlanta" then you need to have the words "Joe's Heating and Air of Atlanta" on your page or on multiple pages.

The search engines will not add you to the SERP's or Search Engine Results Pages unless you have the words on your page.

It is really that simple.

Search engines work based on keywords. They match up words in your pages with the phrase that are being searched for.

There are no magic meta tags, there are no keyword tricks, no gimmicks or software you can download that will help.

Meta tags? every search engine openly tells you they don't use them to determine the page content. Since the visitor does not see them, they don't factor it into the results.

Just write pages with good content and make sure you use the words in those pages that you want to be found for.

The process of optimization your website is just making sure you have that content on your pages.

Make sure you have your address or city and information that people may search for.

I always tell our customers to take advantage of the blog program to add content quickly and get those keywords added with little effort.

I would encourage Joe from Joe's heating and air to write articles how he just installed a Trane air conditioning unit over in Carterville.

Talk about the local town, mention geographic locations, citys you drove through and talk in detail about your service.

Then when someone is searching for an a/c unit in Cartersville Georgia, they find Joe's page and call him.

Now an SEO company could do that for you, but they would need to add pages to your website, build content for you. But what do they know about installing air conditioning?

The problem is, they don't do that.

The sell you something completely different and often don't even access your website.

They just take your money, tell you they increased your link ratio or page rank using their their "secret sauce".

SEO is one of the biggest scams online and is a running joke among all experts.

Google even has a blurb in their help section talking about how they get solicited all the time with letters and emails that say, Dr Mr Google, we did not find your website on the internet but we can help you get to the top of the search engines.

Now, Thats pretty funny, right?

So are people really that gullible?

It appears that they are.

Because these companies make millions off of website owners and provide nothing of value.

And anyone that thinks they can pay a few hundred dollars to an seo company show up higher than companies like walmart, who spend billions in advertising, well that is just crazy.

Don't you think if you could pay to get your way to the top, companies like walmart with deep deep pockets, would have every page of every search.

But it just doesn't work that way. So these would be SEO experts are just conning you.

You can go over to fiverr.com and hire people for 5 bucks to write articles and content for your website.

That content will get you more traffic than any SEO company can ever deliver.

The problem is knowing what to write.

And the sad truth is, you are the only expert on your business.

So to take advantage of the Internet and SEO you just need to take the time, to add text to your own pages.

Articles about how you do business, the jobs you have done, the products you sell, the fun you had at an employee picnic.

The same content we tell you that people are looking for when they come to your website.

So TRUE SEO, is just building a website with information that people want to read.

Now there are some things you should know about SEO that an expert can help with.

Simple things like, search engines only read text, images do not help. Flash files are invisible to searches, graphics are not understood.

So use text for your keywords. Create links to pages so search engines can get to the pages and read the content.

These are thinks you can read online in 10 minutes from any SEO expert offering advice.

Other than that, there really is nothing more you need to know about SEO.

And that is my 2 cents.
